A Calatrava Sunrise

Sunrise at the Milwaukee Art Museum

Sunrise pictures can be striking, with the layering of colors in the sky as the sun peeks over the horizon. Even more striking is including an architectural beauty – in this case the Santiago Calatrava-designed Milwaukee Art Museum.

The Burke Brise Soleil (seen in the picture to the right) is usually photographed when the wings are expanded, but I also enjoy it closed, with Lake Michigan as its backdrop, looking like the bow of a ship rising from the lake.

This photo uses a technique called HDR (High Dynamic Range) in order to show clear definition of the building in a difficult lighting situation. Even the barely-risen sun produces a great deal of light, making it difficult to show the detail in the darkened building.

Milwaukee Art Museum at Dawn

Here’s another example of a photo using HDR. This photo is taken before sunrise, in the early dawn – which still produces a lot of light in the sky. A jet stream can be seen in the sky behind the Art Museum, adding an interesting dimension to the photo.

With HDR, I take 3 photos, bracketing the exposure to get one that captures highlights, one that captures shadows, and a third for mid-tones. I’ll describe this technique more fully in a future post, but by combining the 3 photos, I can produce a photo that has much more tonal range than a single photo is capable of producing.

Milwaukee Skyline

A final and very different view of the Milwaukee Art Museum, this one taken shortly after sunrise. The museum is in the center of the photo, across the breakwater, with the US Bank building just to its right and the Discovery World Museum all the way to the left. Although difficult to see in this light, the moon can be seen high in the sky above the Discovery World Museum.

This last photo is not HDR – the lighting conditions are more even across the scene so the camera is able to capture all of the available tones in the picture.

Picture of the Month – August 2009

Saturday, September 5th, 2009
Hillsboro Lighthouse

Hillsboro Lighthouse

My picture of the month for August is from a series of early morning photos I took at Hillsboro Inlet in Pompano Beach, Florida.

The clouds were benign, although they look quite threatening in the dawn light. They help set the mood for the scene and create interest – indeed, the picture would lack feeling with an empty sky.

The lighthouse also has just a touch of the rising sunlight on its left edge – adding some warmth to an otherwise stark, black lighthouse.

Hillsboro Lighthouse

Hillsboro Lighthouse

Hillsboro Lighthouse

Just north of Pompano Beach in Florida, sitting on the Atlantic Ocean, is the Hillsboro Lighthouse.

This lighthouse, seen here at dawn, is still in service and is considered one of the brightest lights in southeast United States. From sea, this lighthouse can be seen almost halfway to the Bahamas.

I visited the lighthouse and the corresponding harbor in early morning – about a half hour prior to sunrise. This time of morning provides deep blue skies with clouds that have a tinge of orange as the sun begins to rise over the horizon.

Fishing Boat

Fishing Boat

The lighthouse is on the point of the Hillsboro Inlet, a small inlet that’s home to a number of fishing charters and private boats.

This picture shows one of the fishing boats leaving the harbor before sunrise – heading out into the Atlantic Ocean. Fisherman abound in the early morning hours, with fishing boats constantly leaving the harbor. The boats are not the only way to fish, however, as many of the fishermen take positions on the docks surrounding the harbor.

Normally, part of the enjoyment of getting up early is the silence and the solitude as I take in what nature has to provide – in this case however, the harbor was busy with lots of activity – along with the sounds of the boats heading out to sea. For the larger boats, a drawbridge separates the marina from the ocean, and in the early morning it’s busy as well.

This picture shows some of the houses and condos that populate one side of the harbor.

The view is from a small city park that is nestled between the main road and the harbor. What I like about this photo is the early morning light as it’s reflected on the posts of the piers.

However, my biggest challenge on this photo session was not getting up before dawn to get to the park, it was the high humidity, and the impact that had on my camera lens.

This last picture to the right is actually one of the first photos I took – while it looks like a foggy morning, it’s really the condensation that formed in my camera lens.

The camera took quite a while to acclimate to the humidity, so it was good that I arrived as early as I did.

Keep this in mind if you take any photos where there is such a wide discrepancy in humidity between where the camera is stored and where the photos are being taken.

And if you’re in the Ft. Lauderdale area, check out the Hillsboro Lighthouse!

Picture of the Month – April 2009

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

For April’s picture of the month, I chose a pre-dawn picture taken at Milwaukee’s lakefront.

War Memorial at Dawn

War Memorial at Dawn

Normally, I focus on the Calatrava-designed addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum, which features the Burke Bries Soleil.

For this picture, however, I chose the Art Museum’s War Memorial as the foreground subject. The War Memorial was built in 1957, and was designed by another famous architect – Eero Saarinen. It is described as a floating cross, with wings cantilevered from a central base.

Although over 50 years old, the War Memorial still has a modernistic look and remains an impressive building perched along the lakefront. This picture was exposed for 1/6 second at f/11 (ISO 200), and was taken just before sunrise.

Chicago Sunrise

Trees in Silhouette

Trees in Silhouette

Chicago Skyline
Chicago Skyline

Short post this morning, as I’m out of town today, visiting family in Chicago. I took the opportunity, however, to get out before everyone awoke, in order to take some sunrise pictures from a different vantage point than my usual spots. I got out just as the sun was rising, which was a little later than ideal. Oftentimes you will get better and more diverse colors in the sky just before the sun rises – mixing blues and reds in the predawn sky.

The Chicago Skyline picture features the John Hancock building, towering above the building right along the shoreline of Lake Michigan. Turning around, I noticed the still baren trees silhouetted against the rising yellow sun. One of the advantages of early morning photo trips is that there are rarely people wandering around getting in the way of your subject. On this trip, all I had to contend with were the early morning fisherman who were clearly focused on watching their fishing poles.
