Picture of the Month – August 2009

Hillsboro Lighthouse

Hillsboro Lighthouse

My picture of the month for August is from a series of early morning photos I took at Hillsboro Inlet in Pompano Beach, Florida.

The clouds were benign, although they look quite threatening in the dawn light. They help set the mood for the scene and create interest – indeed, the picture would lack feeling with an empty sky.

The lighthouse also has just a touch of the rising sunlight on its left edge – adding some warmth to an otherwise stark, black lighthouse.

Picture of the Month – July

4th of July Fireworks

4th of July Fireworks

My picture of the month for July is an image of red, white & blue fireworks, taken on the 4th of July at Kletsch Park in Glendale, Wisconsin.

These fireworks were especially memorable because we had our 2 1/2 year old grandson, Gavin, with us. These were Gavin’s first fireworks, and as they started he squealed with delight – loving both the loud sounds and the colorful light displays.

After a little while, he began to tire of the fireworks and explore other things around him, but he quickly turned back to the fireworks as the grand finale began. Watching him watch the fireworks was as much fun as just watching the fireworks – and it definitely made for a memorable evening.

Picture of the Month – June 2009

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

My picture of the month for June is an image of the last remaining covered bridge in Wisconsin.

Covered Bridge Park

Covered Bridge Park

Covered Bridge Park in Cedarburg, Wisconsin is home to this bridge, which crosses the Cedar River.

The picture evokes feelings of a lazy summer day in Wisconsin, with the river calmly running through the park, and the trees in full bloom.

This picture was taken for 1/125th second at f/8 (ISO 200). To capture the entire scene, I used the wide angle setting (28 mm) of my Tamron 28 – 300 mm telephoto lens.

Picture of the Month – May 2009

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

I’m a little late posting my picture of the month for May – but better late than never.

Picture of the Month - May 2009

Picture of the Month - May 2009

Given that I spent quite a bit of May experimenting with High Speed Flash Photography, it’s only right that my picture of the month should reflect that.

So with that in mind, I picked this picture to represent a number of attempts to freeze a moment in time.

I’m using my homebuilt sound detector (described here) to trigger a flash in a darkened room. The sound that triggers everything is the pellet gun (shown here), firing a pellet at around 400 feet/second directly into the water balloon.

In order to get as crisp a picture as possible, I’m using a Vivitar 283 flash on its shortest duration of 1/30,000 second – keeping the shutter on my camera open for a couple of seconds as I fire the pellet gun.
